My experience in 2014 diving on the Outer Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef has led me to going out even further to escape the day trip divers with low skills who happily damage coral. The Spoilsport steamed out of Cairns at 4.30pm with 14 divers plus crew on board and by next sunrise we were mooring out by the Cod Hole as the first stop on the trip to the Coral Sea.
The Mike Ball Liveaboard experience is rather nice... and a step up from other liveaboards I have done. Great crew and superb facilities. Dive sites weren't too shabby either. Not of the quality of Vanuatu back in the 80s or Sipadan in Borneo but there were some nice moments ~ still too much dead coral even out there.
I drowned my laptop with a leaking water bottle in my laptop bag on the single engine Cessna flight back to Cairns. (sob!)
So... some files recovered.... turns out I took plenty of boring footage in reality. Here is a short capture of a 50 minute dive amongst the top tier predators...
